This photo shows a general store in Boonsboro, Maryland,
around the mid-1880's. Boonsboro has been described as "a one-street town",
which may have been true; but if so it was certainly a fashionable street
indeed. In addition to the prominent display announcing the availability of
the very exclusive Horsey Rye, notice that all the gentlemen (including the
boy) are wearing fine new hats.
As an example of how some things remain the same over the decades, this
photo might even have been issued as an advertisement for the hat
manufacturer -- the implication being that all these obviously successful
men chose only the finest brand of whiskey... and of hats (available in all
sizes, of course).
